The Stick is inserted (beneath the ice cream cavities) in a slot whose compartment (part of the mold) is hinged. The two parts of that compartment are held together by nubs and matching holes. The hinge allows you to open the slotted compartment and lift the ice cream out by the stick, so the Ice Cream mixture and your fingers don't make contact. That means easy, fast and clean removal of ice cream from the mold.
